Avast antivirus is only the second antivirus option to offer a sandboxing tool for free; AutoSandbox provides a virtualized environment to run any suspicious applications. Whenever Avast antivirus identifies a new and suspicious application, it will prompt users to run the application in the sandbox. While the application is running, Avast antivirus will scan it for threats and if it deems the application’s code to be dangerous or malicious, it will shutdown the virtual computer. Hence, ensuring the user’s real machine remains safe.
The new WebRep, showcased in the Avast antivirus 6.0 is a browser-security add-on, which supports a search result ranking and website reputation service that uses a combination of data from Avast’s virus labs and user voting to determine a safety score for a site. Avast 6.0 has also introduced the Script Shield which detects malicious scripts hidden in web pages and prevents them from hijacking and damaging your computer.
Other notable minor improvements on Avast antivirus version 6.0 is the availability of the “restore factory settings” option in the troubleshooting section. There is also the option to restore the Shields settings only while leaving other changes untouched. In addition, users can also now set automatic actions for the boot-time scan on the new sidebar gadget for Windows 7 and Vista, thus providing flexibility in managing the length and time-consuming boot-scan.
